Cabbage Paper is a two sided research project about developing a translucent, bio-degradable material and the craft of making Japanese paper lanterns. The project started from the fascination of Isamu Noguchi's lantern collection and how to translate its key component, rice paper, to a European ecosystem and production line.
Red Cabbage became the starting to point to experiment with paper making, trying various techniques of soaking, drying and pressing to material to apply it later on the lantern's structure.
The lantern's skeleton was created by analyzing the process of how Japanese craftsmen use multi-part wood molds and developing a 3D printed one-part alternative. The 3D-printed mold allows to build a smaller version of Noguchi's BB3-33S.
